CHANGING PACKAGING TO ENHANCE SUSTAINABILITY

Integrating circular principles for more sustainable packaging

Hilti’s packaging isn’t merely functional, it’s a brand ambassador – a symbol of quality and trust. This is all the more reason for us to integrate it into our sustainability journey and consider circular principles as early as possible in the design and manufacturing processes.

We focus on minimising packaging while maximising the use of recycled and recyclable materials across our supply chain. At the same time, we ensure our products arrive safely—demonstrating our commitment to both sustainability and quality.

OUR KEY INITIATIVES FOR MORE SUSTAINABLE PACKAGING

HILTI CARDBOARD PRODUCT PACKAGING

Hilti is transforming 30 million cardboard boxes to enhance their sustainability. We have redeveloped all red product packaging to include a new material selection and a new design. The cardboard product packaging now consists of a single material, with a brown outer layer that contains a large amount of recycled content. Two-color printing, in red and white, is partially applied. By eliminating plastic wrapping and using only paper labels, the packaging is now 100% recyclable. With an average of 70% recycled material, the new design aims for 100% recycled content in the future. And thanks to this initiative we are saving 700 tons of CO2 every year!

HILTI TOOL CASE

We are turning old Hilti tool cases into new ones. By incorporating recycled materials, including from our own tool cases, we want to close the loop for our iconic Hilti tool case.

As part of our Fleet Management tool leasing program, we collect tools, batteries and tool cases from our customers at the end of their leasing contracts – at no extra cost. If reusing the tool case is not possible, the material is shredded, ground, cleaned and sorted. The recycled material is then used to create new tool cases.

Overall, the tool case incorporates 20% recycled content, resulting in a reduction of 500 tons of CO₂ emissions annually.

HILTI TOOL BAG

Hilti bags and pouches are available in a variety of shapes and sizes. Our top three soft bags are produced from 100% recycled fabric, contributing to an overall average of 70% recycled content. We prioritize recycled materials for every new bag, continuously transforming our collection towards more sustainable options.

By switching the fabrics of the Hilti soft bags to recycled material, we save over 600 tons of virgin plastic and 1700 tons of CO2 annually.Hilti bags and pouches are available in a variety of shapes and sizes. Our red Hilti tool case, the tool bag and our cardboard packaging represent a journey of purpose and circular innovation. In addition to these three flagship projects, we are actively pursuing over 20 other packaging initiatives. Converting our packaging to more sustainable options is one of many initiatives in our decarbonization journey.
